The King’s Speech, which is written by the Government, has been delivered laying out the Government’s plans for legislative reform over the next 12 months.
The central message of the Speech focused on bolstering the country’s economic, national and energy security. The King said his Ministers will enable reforms that support higher growth and a fair deal for working people. Key areas covered in the Speech included:
Business
Legislation will be introduced to tackle late payments and to reduce the burden of unnecessary regulation through innovation. Legislation to take advantage of new trading opportunities, including a Bill to strengthen ties with the EU will be brought forward.
Infrastructure
Measures to unlock the benefits of airport expansion, road building and Northern Powerhouse Rail will be introduced, as well as taking action to safeguard the domestic production of steel.
Public services
Reforms to the Police, NHS and criminal justice system will be implemented.
Immigration
An Immigration and Asylum Bill will be introduced to “increase confidence in the security of the immigration and asylum systems”.
Apprenticeships
It was announced that the Government will continue to invest in apprenticeships and measures that tackle youth unemployment. It will also continue to reform the welfare system to support both young and disabled people to flourish in work.
Digital ID
The Government will proceed with the introduction of digital ID to “modernise how citizens interact with public services” through a Digital Access to Services Bill.
Energy
An Energy Independence Bill will be introduced to scale-up homegrown renewable energy and protect living standards.
Other legislative reforms include measures affecting education, housing and cyber security.
