Mumsnet is calling on MPs to back an amendment to the Employment Rights Bill requiring large employers with more than 250 employees to publish their parental leave policies and pay. The parenting site, which has been campaigning for change in this area since 2019, has written to all the FTSE 250 urging them to publish their parental leave policies. According to figures for 2024, 43 of the FTSE 100 companies already provide this transparency.
A survey by Mumsnet highlighted that 82% of parents and prospective parents are reluctant to ask potential employers about parental leave policies.
Mumsnet Founder and Executive Chair, Justine Roberts, said: “The truly best talent wouldn’t apply if they thought there was a risk that over the course of the next five to 10 years, I’m working for this company, I want to have a family. I’m not going to apply for a job if I’m not sure they’re going to treat me well.”
On 1 July 2025, the Government launched a landmark review of parental leave and pay, alongside its Employment Rights Bill: Our Roadmap for Delivering Change, setting out planned implementation dates for the reforms in the Employment Rights Bill. Under the Bill, measures to remove the service requirement for paternity leave and unpaid parental leave are due to take effect in April 2026.
